Abstract
As we go to press (January, 1988), six of the seven candidates who participated in the Democratic debate are still in the race. Senator Biden has dropped out but former Senator Hart has re‐entered. Since Senator Hart did not have time before our deadline to respond to the questions that had been answered by the other Democratic candidates, and since he had already shed out his position on many of the same issues in a speech that he had delivered at Duke University on January 27, 1987, we elected to publish his speech. We have edited the transcripts minimally. The most common form of editing was tightening the questions through omission of extraneous phrases, but we also eliminated some of the “We're glad to be in this great state of North Carolina” type of commentary.
