NEW MEXICO'S 2‐YEAR COLLEGES: A DIVERSE ENTERPRISE

Abstract

This article describes the diversity of 2‐year colleges that dot the map of New Mexico – a conglomeration of institutions that vary immeasurably in size and scope, governance structure, financial support, populations served, and historical development. The following addresses the past, present, and future of the state's community, junior, and technical colleges, including insights into those schools organized under state statutes as well as federally funded campuses for Native Americans. This work is organized to provide information about 20 individual campuses and their respective institutional profiles, including programs and students served. In addition, I provide insights into the hybrid “system for coordination” among 2‐year colleges, particularly the key role for the New Mexico Commission on Higher Education, the New Mexico State Department of Education, and related professional associations and agencies. Overall statewide perspectives are an integral part of the document. The article concludes with forecasts for the future of New Mexico's 2‐year colleges. Discussion includes key issues confronting the state's 20 institutions as they look to the year 2000 and beyond. Central to their success will be their ability to respond to opportunities such as technology, literacy education, resources, emerging business partnerships, and the diversity that exists among programs and institutions. This diversity provides a certain richness to their quest to continue servicing students across New Mexico.
