Abstract
This article examines community colleges in Idaho from three perspectives: historical development, contemporary nature, and future outlook. The historical development of community colleges in the Gem State involved both secular and parochial initiatives. House Bill 363, passed by the Idaho legislature in 1963, established the legal framework that determined the contemporary nature of Idaho's public community colleges, including creation of districts, powers of trustees, and funding. Future issues confronting community colleges in Idaho include funding, defining more clearly the role of community colleges in the state's higher education system, expanding the role of community colleges in workforce preparation, and accommodating increasing enrollments.
