Abstract
With 450,000 people and almost 100,000 square miles of area, Wyoming can arguably be called the most rural state in the nation. Many residents live more than 150 miles from one of the state's seven community colleges or its single university. Access to college is an important concern throughout the state. Wyoming's community colleges were born soon after WWII and have grown steadily over the past half century. A seven‐member commission provides coordination and some oversight. The colleges currently enroll more than 14,000 full‐time‐equivalent (FTE) students. Enrollment ranges from 3,200 FTEs to fewer than 1,000 FTEs. More than 60% of community college funding comes from state appropriations. Tuition is among the lowest in the country.
