A Review of the Neuromuscular Bases for Motor Learning

Pages 59-69 | Published online: 06 Jan 2014

Abstract

The neuromuscular bases for motor learning are discussed from the aspect of (1) structure of muscle and the motor unit; (2) reafferent and servo-mechanism concept of overt behavior; (3) postulations of neural patterns resulting in learning and memory; and (4) other parameters such as the emotional, temporal factors, and mental practice and incidental memory. The suggested role of the teacher or therapist in motor learning is to set the appropriate psychological and physical stage, give the chief sensory cue to the learner to use at the right time, and then, let nature take its course.
