Comparison of Segment Ratio Weights and Segment Centers of Gravity in the Living Human Male and Female

Abstract

The projected center of gravity of the hand, lower arm, upper arm, foot, lower leg, upper leg and whole body was determined experimentally using the product moment method on 10 living male and 10 living female subjects. The head-trunk segment was calculated using the weighted mean distance method. Proximal and distal percentage ratios were calculated for each individual segment center of gravity. A mean and standard deviation were calculated for the males and for the females. The weight of each segment was calculated using the volume by displacement method and the mean weight density of that segment. A ratio of segment weight to whole body weight was calculated for each subject. It was found, concerning ratio segment weights, in a 2-tailed t test at the .05 level of significance that the lower arm segment for women was greater than that for men. All other segments failed to reject. It was found, concerning proximal percentage ratios of segment centers of gravity, in a 2-tailed t test at the .05 level of significance that the whole body, lower leg segment, and foot segment for women were greater than those for men. All other segments failed to reject.
