The stigma of being Black in Britain

Pages 49-54 | Received 23 Nov 2017, Accepted 24 Nov 2017, Published online: 26 Mar 2018

ABSTRACT

Despite 50 years of anti-racial discrimination law in the UK, the political economy of the word ‘black’ remains negative. Its stigmatisation can be attributed to hyperinvisibility and hyperinvisitibility of the black population in Britain as well as the displacement of identity politics by the politics of identity.
