Psychiatric power and levels of concealment

Pages 125-137 | Received 27 Feb 1995, Accepted 14 May 1995, Published online: 24 Dec 2007

Abstract

An often neglected side effect of psychoactive medication is its tendency to change the meaning of the psychological difficulties experienced by the patient. The first part of this article offers a brief case example that enables analysis of this situation. Some ideas follow that help to analyze psychiatric power and its concealment. There is power in such professions often concealed from clients and professionals alike, leading sometimes to paradoxical outcomes, such as making matters worse.
