SELF-REFLECTION IN ADOLESCENCE

Pages 203-213 | Published online: 10 Nov 2010

Abstract

The hypothesis that self and others will be assigned to the same poles of bipolar constructs with a relative frequency of 0.625, and three related predictions derived from a formal model of self-reflection, were tested with 237 adolescents (125 girls, 112 boys), ages 12 to 18 years. They individually completed repertory grids in which they evaluated themselves and 11 acquaintances with bipolar constructs (e.g., generous-stingy). The mean relative frequency of similar-to-self evaluations was 0.633, which is consistent with earlier findings with adults. There were no significant age or gender differences in terms of either similar-to-self evaluations or three related grid indices, which also closely approximated their hypothesized values.
