Abstract
The context of each stroke is at once universal and uniquely personal. From the perspective of the consumer, stroke rehabilitation is just one moment in the lifework of recovery, compensation, and adaptation. Using a single case example, the experience of one stroke survivor and family illustrates the context of stroke recovery and the potential impacts of family members and caregivers on optimal stroke outcomes. The insights and implications for professionals focus on individualizing rehabilitation, developing the capacity of families and caregivers to maximize functional gains, and empowering consumers to be daring in reclaiming roles and activities threatened by disability.
