Northeast China: Waiting for Regionalism

Abstract

Northeast China is a swing region in a divided country. Its incorporation into Northeast Asia would give a strong boost to China’s entry into the global economy. Yet efforts to date have proved futile, and the Asian financial crisis has dimmed hopes for regionalism without a sharp shift in Chinese policy.
