Patricia Mulcahy-Ernt
Patricia I. Mulcahy-Ernt is an Associate Professor of Education at the University of Bridgeport and works with graduate-level teachers in reading and language' arts education. Her research focuses on the literacy histories of adults, comprehension and composing processes, and content reading strategies. This article is a revised version of the Presidential Address delivered on November 2, 1996 at the 29th Annual Conference of the College Reading and Learning Association in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Special acknowledgement for their participation in the interviews in this address is extended to Dr. Martha Maxwell, noted researcher and writer in the field of learning assistance, to Dr. Robert Wolsch, researcher and writer in the field of speech and language arts, and to Dr. Richard Rubenstein, President of the University of Bridgeport and distinguished scholar of the Holocaust.
