Handbook of human factors and ergonomics

edited by Gavriel Salvendy and Waldemar Karwowski, 5th edition, Wiley, 2021, Hoboken, New Jersey, 1600 pp., ISBN 9781119636083 (hbk), 9781119636106 (epdf), 9781119636090 (epub) Hardcover 315, E-Book 252

This is the fifth updated and extended edition (including the following sections: About the Editors, Contributors, Foreword, Preface, 57 chapters of the main text, Index) of Handbook of Human Factors and Ergonomics newly revised and edited by Dr Gavriel Salvendy (University Distinguished Professor at the College of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Central Florida, USA) and Dr Waldemar Karwowski (Pegasus Professor and Chairman of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Systems and Executive Director of the Institute for Advanced Systems Engineering at the University of Central Florida, USA).

The Editors have successfully integrated material received from 142 selected authors, who are recognized experts representing leading centers in human factors and ergonomics (HFE) all over the world. The authors have compiled the information from 10,193 references, and presented 619 figures and 260 tables. Their effort resulted in a massive volume; hardback copy mass is 2.9 kg, so for ergonomic reasons the epdf should be recommended for everyday use.

The main text has been arranged into nine thematic groups of chapters: ‘1. Human Factors Function’ (two chapters); ‘2. Human Factors Fundamentals’ (eight chapters); ‘3. Design of Equipment, Tasks, Jobs, and Environments’ (seven chapters); ‘4. Design for Health, Safety, and Comfort’ (eight chapters); ‘5. Human Performance Modeling’ (six chapters); ‘6. System Evaluation’ (three chapters); ‘7. Human–Computer Interaction’ (11 chapters); ‘8. Design for Individual Differences’ (4 chapters); and ‘9. Select Applications’ (eight chapters).

Every chapter presents the up-to-date state of the art in the area it covers, including rapidly expanding new fields of HFE, i.e., modeling and simulation of human systems, man–machine/robot systems, artificial intelligence, data analysis, information technology and cyber security in HFE. The content of each chapter is a complete unit, so it can be studied independently. Thus, the book is of a comprehensive, encyclopedic type, because the extensive Index of terms (46 pp.) enables easy tracking and identification of the required subject.

Handbook of Human Factors and Ergonomics could be recommended for a very broad audience: from beginners to experts. But, it should be specifically recommended as a textbook for students taking courses in biomechanics, physiology, psychology and sociology; as well as a handbook for researchers and/or professionals in all these branches of contemporary HFE.
