Announcement of HERA's Papers of Year 2007

Pages 207-209 | Published online: 17 Apr 2008

The editors of HERA are pleased to announce the selection of Papers of Year 2007. We are proud of the high quality mix of papers that are published annually in our journal. Selection of papers of the year is a special pat on the back for authors whose peers recommended it.

Selection of papers of the year begins with the HERA Editorial Board. This group of distinguished scientists and risk assessment professionals nominated papers for consideration. HERA's senior editors for human health, ecological risk assessment, and risk communication pared the list of nominated papers to two within each category: Human Risk Assessment, Ecological Risk Assessment, Integration of Human and Ecological Risk Assessment, and Risk Communication. HERA's Editors in Chief made the final selections of Papers of Year 2007. The selection criteria were twofold: (a) degree of contribution to the field of risk assessment and (b) overall quality of writing.

We congratulate the authors of the selected Papers of Year 2007.

HERA PAPERS OF YEAR 2007

Ecological Risk Assessment Paper of Year 2007

AM Colnar and WG Landis. Conceptual Model Developments for Invasive Species and a Regional Risk Assessment Case Study: The European Green Crab, Carcinus maenas, at Cherry Point, Washington, USA. HERA 13(1):120–55

An important advance in ecological risk assessment at the regional scale dealing with invasive species, arguably a more important global stressor than chemical contamination.” (HERA Senior Editor)

Human Risk Assessment Paper of Year 2007

DR Brown, BG Callahan, and AL Boissevain. An Assessment of Risk from Particulate Released from Outdoor Wood Boilers. HERA 13(1):192–208

An interesting human RA for wood smoke exposure that shows the problems of using 24-h and annual averages in air quality when shorter term peaks, which such averaging ignores, may be associated with appreciable risks.” (HERA Editorial Board Member)

Integration of Human and Ecological Risk Assessment Paper of Year 2007

T Vermeire, WR Munns Jr, J Sekizawa, G Suter, and G Van der Kraak. An Assessment of Integrated Risk Assessment. HERA 13(2):339–54

The authors provide an innovative integrated approach based on common mechanisms and systems biology.” (HERA Editorial Board Member)
