Pages 86-92 | Published online: 20 May 2010

Abstract

A study of history as an undergraduate led the author toward the lifelong goal of finding participatory alternatives to authoritarian leadership. Early clinical work in psychology gradually shifted toward industrial/organizational activities. A diverse career path provided valuable experience in a wide variety of organizational settings. Washington, DC, public policy experience began at the Internal Revenue Service, followed by service on the U.S. Senate staff. Later experience deepened understanding of government agency dynamics at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Department of Commerce. As for private industry, professional efforts involved diverse settings, including transportation, energy, healthcare, and space. In all of these modalities, one key to progress has consistently emerged: partnership, achieved through coalition building, yielding enhanced value for both the public and private sectors.
