Bearing strength of fast ice and Antarctic transport operations during the spring‐summer period

Pages 15-30 | Published online: 23 Dec 2008

Abstract

The conditions for ship‐to‐shore cargo operations over the fast ice at the Soviet Union's Antarctic stations are described. The effect of temperature and structural nonhomogeneity of ice on the bearing strength is analyzed, and formulas are derived for computing the minimum thickness of fast ice required for the movement of various types of vehicles.
