Logistical and support facilities for the Soviet Antarctic Expeditions

Abstract

Over the period 1979–81 the Twenty‐Fifth Soviet Antarctic Expedition was operating in the Antarctic; 296 wintering personnel and 293 seasonal workers operated from 8 different stations. The author reviews the build‐up of the operation during its first 25 years, in terms of numbers of support ships, overland transport, aircraft, generator capacity, fuel tank capacity, radios and buildings.
