Pages 589-599 | Published online: 07 Feb 2007

ABSTRACT

The aim of this work was to improve the accuracy of the concave profile worm thread by using a new generating surface of grinding wheel. To support the geometrical and technological optimization, the current article describes how we produced a smooth and accurately finished tool that will provide maximum line of contact between the tool and the worm with minimum stress concentration at any point. The present study proposed grinding the thread with grinding wheel having a curvature profile in the axial plane in the form of an arc of hyperbola. The generating equation of the tool profile and its arrangement with respect to the worm during grinding were determined.
