Cuba: A Personal Journey

Abstract

This article is a personal reflection of a social work professor’s journey to Cuba and the impact this experience had on her teaching and understanding of identity. The trip to Cuba provided an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the influence of a parent’s culture and immigrant experience in shaping our sense of self. In turn, this understanding was applied to teaching a diversity course for students enrolled in a graduate social work program. Implications for teaching social work are discussed.
