Professional Ethics: Complex Issues for the Social Work Profession

Abstract

A code of ethics is a contract between professionals that emerges when an occupation becomes recognized in a formal manner and individuals share moral ideals regarding their contribution to the common good. Since the first code of ethics was approved by the National Association of Social Workers in 1960, ethics have provided an important framework for social work practice. This article presents a brief overview of the history of social work ethics and poses areas for future thought and consideration as the challenges and risks to practitioners continue to increase in what has become a litigious environment.
