Performance of mixed asphalt blended with furfural extract oil and its distinction from pure asphalt

ABSTRACT

Effect of furfural extract oil (FEO) on performance of asphalt and comparison between mixed asphalt blended with FEO and pure asphalt were investigated. Results indicate FEO could be used as modifier of hard asphalt to prepare a higher penetration grade asphalt whose properties can satisfy technical requirements. However, compared with pure asphalt, mixed asphalt exhibits lower ductility value, less ability to resist rutting at high temperature and cracking at low temperature, and poorer anti-aging performance. Therefore, mixed asphalt should be cautiously used in areas with harsh environment, and the performance of mixed asphalt should be fully evaluated by comprehensive analysis if the mixed asphalt has to be used.
