The management of municipal solid waste in China

Abstract

With the rapid urbanization of China, municipal solid waste (MSW) has been increasing. The management of MSW becomes one of the most important environmental issues in China. This paper presented the MSW management status quo including legislation, management, and the integrated processes involved, namely, source reduction, collection, transportation, recovery, recycling, treatment, and final disposal. Many critical MSW management issues were discussed and several strategic suggestions in regards to regulatory implementation, market mechanisms, technological innovations and public awareness were forwarded.
