Abstract

A Knitmesh packing composed of glass wool and stainless steel has been used to remove fine hazes of kerosine (20 ‐ 25 μ) at different phase ratios upto 1000 ppm in the wastewater stream. An emperical equation was obtained to predict the pressure drop across such bed as :

A parametric study was conducted to investigate the effect of operating conditions such as flow rate, bed hight and oil loading on the pressure drop and bed efficiency. The physical processes occuring in the bed and resulting in kerosine separation are explained in terms of coalescence phenomenon. The selection of bed hight and for a given wastewater flow rate and oil loading could be carried out using the graphs presented in this study.
