Abstract

Partially hepatectomized rats were exposed to an acute dose of mercury (5 mg Hg2/kg i.p. as HgCl2) and its influence on renal glutathione redox system, 24 hours later was studied. Significant loss of GSH‐reductase, GSH‐peroxidase and G‐6‐P‐dehydrogenase occurred in mercury exposed non‐hepatectomized (sham) and hepatectomized rats. Mercury intoxicated hepatectomized rats resulted into a considerable decrease in total ‐SH and GSH levels. Further, the process of lipid peroxidation was significantly enhanced. The results indicate that toxic effects of mercuric chloride on renal system are more severe in hepatectomized rats reflecting an additional metabolic and/or oxidative burden produced on kidney due to the partial removal of hepatic mass.
