Abstract

An environmental measurement system was devised that covers five areas: surface water quality, groundwater quality, water quantity and use, and natural resource protection. A fifth area, air quality, was covered by a co‐investigator. For each area, indices were developed that were designed to encompass that area. Over fifty indices were developed, and the research stimulated the development of many more. Utilization of these indices provides a system of measurement of environmental quality that is broader than typical chemical/biochemical measurements that are used. The SAFE Project may be a prototype for environmental assessments for other geographical areas.
