Abstract

The microorganisms were isolated from the gut of earthworms treated with hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH). The gut isolates were studied for HCH degrading capability. Around 26–28 per cent of total isolates from earthworm gut were capable of HCH degradation. The bacterial strains capable of HCH degradation were Flavobacterium spp, Pseudomonas spp and Acromobacter spp. The strains were capable of degrading α, β and γ isomers of HCH.
