Abstract

The quality of a dairy plant wastewater that had been discharged in a ditch and then into a small stream was evaluated over a three‐year period. The wastewater was released to the ditch, where after traversing a distance of approximately 100 meters, it entered a snail moving stream of water. Vegetation in the ditch served as a biofilter for the wastewater prior to entering the stream. The wastewater parameters measured were biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total suspended solids (TSS), and pH.

The average daily effluent flow‐rate from the dairy plant was 79,500 liters with an approximate BOD of 541 mg/L, TSS of 126/L, and pH of 7.2.

The dairy plant effluent limitations at sampling point of 35.86 Ibs/d of BOD, 53.86 Ibs/d of TSS, and pH limits of 6–9 as allowed by discharge permits was not exceeded for any month during the three‐year study period.
