Abstract

The increasing concern that is being voiced as to the destruction and pollution of the environment has produced growing awareness of the need for more effective sewage treatment. Any failure in achieving such goal will be adversely reflected on environment and the receiving water body in particular.

This paper is an attempt to evaluate the efficiency of a biological treatment plant in removing various pollutants. The plant was put under monitoring for about 20 months. Samples were taken from all unit processes and a wide range of tests had been conducted on each sample.

In the light of collected data it can be said that the plant showed a reduced performance in lowering the concentration of main pollutants. All unit processes appear to act below the degree of effectivencess expected in similar plants.

The paper also revealed that Iraqi homes could produce as much as 1.5–2.5 times the organic loads produced by American homes. The studied wastewater might be described to fall within the strong type category according to international standards.

This study focused on the reasons behind the remarkable defficiency of the plant. It also set some suggestions and measures to be adopted in order to upgrade and improve plant operation.
