Abstract
A study was made of the quality of deinking sludge originating from five wood‐processing factories in four European countries in 1990. Heavy metals and polychlorinated biphenyls were the main focus of this study and their concentrations were found to be low. The coefficients of variation of the concentrations were below 30% except for chlorophe‐nols. Contaminant partition between the sludges from the deinking and wastewater treatment processes and the wastewater effluent was also studied. Either incineration or landfilling of deinking sludge are acceptable means of disposal.
