Oxygen uptake rate as an extended aeration process control parameter

Pages 951-969 | Published online: 15 Dec 2008

Abstract

Oxygen uptake rate as an extended aeration process control parameter was investigated using a full scale treatment plant. The plant was monitored during a period of expected highly variable influent flow rate and composition. The correlation between oxygen uptake rate on the one hand and hydraulic plus organic loading, effluent quality and sludge settling characteristics on the other, was investigated. Results showed a direct correlation between oxygen uptake rate and food ‐to‐ microorganism ratio. Also, oxygen uptake rate correlated well with influent loadings. No correlations were found between oxygen uptake rate and both effluent quality measured by COD plus TSS and settling characteristics of sludge measured by SVI and ZSV. Results of this study indicate that oxygen uptake rate, in combination with a direct measurement of effluent quality, would provide adequate and reliable information about the operation of extended aeration process.
