Major inorganic species in rain water collected in Majorca (Spain): A preliminary study

Abstract

Major inorganic species (chloride, nitrate, sulphate, calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium) were determined in rain water samples collected on Majorca island (north‐western Mediterranean region) between November 1992 and November 1994. The results reveal marked temporal changes in the contents of all the species studied and an inverse proportionality relationship between concentration and rainfall. The total annual deposition of most of the analytes occurs largely in a few samples. Wet deposition was found to prevail over dry deposition (the latter was roughly one‐fourth the former).
