Abstract
A finite element model of the contaminant transport in the Bosphorus is presented. The flow field obtained by a previous finite element model based on the shallow water equations is used. Streamline upwind Petrov‐Galerkin formulation is used in the spatial discretization of the convection‐diffusion equation on an unstructured triangular grid with linear elements. Integration of the resulting ordinary differential equations system with respect to time is based on the implicit trapezoidal rule. Results for different wind conditions are compared with the solution of the same problem by a Lagrangian transport model.
