Veal waste management systems in the northeastern U.S.

Abstract

There is very little data on veal manure characteristics in the literature. Total solids production values from three references ranged from 1.6 to 5.2 kg/1000 kg live weight per day. Kjeldahl nitrogen values ranged from 0.20 to 0.27 kg/1000 kg live weight per day.

Good sanitation is important for veal health, so large volumes of wastewater are produced in cleaning the stalls. Wastewater volumes will average 120 to 130 L/calf/wk. Earthen basins and storage tanks are the most common manure systems used in the northeast. Irrigation is a more economical disposal method than a slurry spreader.
