Abstract
Experiments were conducted to investigate the nitrite and nitrate removal from aqueous solution using strong base, anionic ion exchange resins. Several operating variables of the ion exchange system, including pH, temperature and initial concentration of nitrogenous compounds, on the exchange capacity were explored. Ion exchange isotherms of the types of Langmuir, Freundlich, modified Langmuir and Jossens et al., types were tried to represent the experimental data of the nitrite and nitrate removal. A mass transfer model based on the squared driving force principle was adopted, and the mass transfer coefficients for the nitrite and nitrate removal were determined for the observed mass transfer data.
