Information Technology Adoption in the Greek Banking Industry

Abstract

In a global environment, information systems are influenced by national information technology infrastructure, government policies and cultural differences. The entire process of information technology adoption is different in different countries. Most research on information technology adoption has concentrated on firms in the UK or US. In this paper we attempt to better understand the determinants of information technology adoption in the Greek banking industry. In this empirical study we found that organizational culture, government policies, foreign exchange rates, and computer prices have significant impact on information technology adoption decisions made by banks.

Subhasish Dasgupta

Subhasish Dasgupta is Assistant Professor of Information Systems in the School of Business and Public Management, The George Washington University, Washington, DC, USA. He holds a BS and MBA from the University of Calcutta, India. and a Ph.D. from Baruch College, The City University of New York, USA. His research interests include global information systems, information technology adoption and diffusion, and electronic commerce. Dr. Dasgupta has published in the Journal of Global Information Management, Logistics Information Management, and Electronic Markets: International of Electronic Commerce and Business Media. He has presented his research at national and international conferences.

Anthony Ioannidis is Assistant Professor of Management at the School of Business & Global Studies, University of La Verne, Athens, Greece, and Director of Corporate Development at OTE Consulting (the consulting arm of the Greek Telecom). He holds a B.S. from the University of Athens, Greece, and, M.B.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. from Baruch College, The City University of New York. Dr. Ioannidis' research interests include Information Technology & Telecommunications, Strategic Management, Privatization, and Corporate Decision Making.

Devraj Agarwal is Senior Consultant at KPMG Consulting, New York, USA. He holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from Delhi University, India, and MBA and Ph.D. from Baruch College, The City University of New York, USA. His research interests include strategic use of information systems, global information management, and electronic commerce. He has published in the Journal of Global Information Management, and presented at national and international conferences.
