Rice: I envision global healthcare without borders, where radiology reading, transcription, and medical tourism are all part of the global economy. As far as medical tourism goes, we are already seeing individuals traveling to other countries where they can receive the best care for a particular condition or procedure. I also anticipate the adoption of best practices to occur at a faster pace.
In the U.S. we hope to see computerized physician order entry, document imaging, and national incentives for patient information sharing. We are trying to move toward the point where the individual owns their own health care record. One particularly exciting example of the potential of IT in healthcare is a wireless sensor for congestive heart failure. This sensor would enable physicians to receive medical observations and data remotely, without the patient ever leaving their home. We still have a ways to go, but the potential for healthcare improvements from IT is truly limitless.
