Perceived Quality of Hospital Services from the Perspective of Doctors and Patients: An Integrative Model

Abstract

The objective of the article is to develop a conceptual model that jointly examines the perception of doctors and patients regarding the quality of services provided by public and private hospitals in Rio de Janeiro. We interviewed 61 doctors and 40 inpatients; the results indicated that the gap in the perceived quality of health services, according to the perception of doctors and patients, is a function of failures in the institution’s infrastructure, in the relationship between doctors and patients, and in the access to services. Such gaps may impair the outcome of care delivered to patients.

RESUMEN

Este artículo tiene por objetivo desarrollar un modelo conceptual que reúna la percepción tanto de médicos como de pacientes, con respecto a la calidad de los servicios prestados por los hospitales públicos y privados en Río de Janeiro. Se entrevistaron 61 médicos y 40 pacientes hospitalizados y los resultados obtenidos indicaron que, de acuerdo con la percepción de médicos y pacientes, la brecha en la calidad percibida de los servicios de salud resulta de fallas en la infraestructura de la institución, en la relación entre médicos y pacientes y en el acceso a los servicios. Dichas brechas afectan el resultado de la atención brindada a los pacientes.

RESUMO

O objetivo do artigo é desenvolver um modelo conceitual que congregue a percepção de médicos e pacientes quanto à qualidade dos serviços prestados por hospitais públicos e privados do Rio de Janeiro. Foram entrevistados 61 médicos e 40 pacientes internados e os resultados indicaram que a lacuna da qualidade percebida dos serviços de saúde, de acordo com a percepção de médicos e pacientes, é em função de falhas na infraestrutura da instituição, no relacionamento entre médicos e pacientes e no acesso aos serviços. Tais lacunas prejudicam o resultado do cuidado entregue aos pacientes.
