Abstract
The spiritual screening tool presented in the following article was developed at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas. This hospital admits a large number of cardiovascular surgery patients whose care is managed by the Heart Care Service Line. This tool was developed in response to the identified need of setting priorities for pastoral care to this large population of patients and sharing relevant observations about those patients with the multidisciplinary care team. The task was to develop a method of spiritual screening that was simple and could be completed in the course of pastoral conversation. The focus was on evaluating support systems and religious coping skills. The goal beyond spiritual screening is the development of intentional pastoral care.
