Abstract
A misanalysis of Barack Obama in 2007–2008 set the stage for a series of strategic and tactical mis-steps by progressive social movements, including but not limited to the Black Freedom Movement. Progressive social movements provided space for Obama rather than placing pressure on him. By doing so, the political Right was provided the opportunity to seize the initiative rather than remaining on the run.
