Graptolites from the Upper Ordovician Dicranograptus clingani Zone at Järrestad, Scania, southern Sweden

Abstract

The Upper Ordovician of Scania (Skåne), southern Sweden, consists mainly of dark grey to black graptolitic shales and mudstones. A 4 m thick vertical section through the middle Dicellograptus Shale, viz. the Mossen Formation, at Järrestad in southeastern Scania is described. The section has yielded graptolites, and a few brachiopods and ostracodes. The graptolites are classified into 13 taxa, among which 11 are identified to species. Graptolites are most common in the upper part of the section, where they are represented by, e.g., Dicranograptus clingani, Climacograptus (Diplacanthograptus) cf. dorotheus, Lasiograptus harknessi, and Orthograptus cf. spinigerus. These graptolites are indicative of the Upper Ordovician D. clingani Zone. Orthograptus ranges almost throughout the section.
