Abstract
The term “Svecofennian”, originally proposed by W. Ramsay (1909), has been used to denote a geological cycle of the Precambrian of Fennoscandia older than the Karelian cycle. Age determinations in recent times have shown that it is not possible to keep this distinction. The two cycles have collided, and the term “Svecofennokarelian”, shortened to Svecokarelian, has been created. The author maintains that it is more convenient to retain the older name Svecofennian as a time concept which comprises also the Karelian.
The Svecofennian supracrustals of central Sweden are intersected by two generations of granites, separated by an epeirogenetic period. The late granite group is generally called serorogenic. The author points out that the name “postorogenic” would be more adequate, as these granites often have a diapiric appearance and cannot be connected with a certain orogenesis.
