Abstract

The Silurian genus Ophioceras has a stratigraphical range from Wenlock to upper Pridoli and is hitherto described from Bohemia, Gotland, northwestern Lithuania, England, Wales, and from Wisconsin and Illinois in the USA. The genus comprises twelve species described up to 1930. Six of these were described by Barrande, two by Foerste and one each by Sowerby, Blake, Angelin, and Lindström. A revision demonstrates that probably only two species, Ophioceras rudens Barrande, 1865 and O. simplex Barrande, 1865 with two subspecies, O. simplex simplex and O. s. proximum, can be recognized. Furthermore, an evolutionary connection can be followed between the two species. Minor evolutionary changes are observed within both species. In spite of their widespread distribution the species do not demonstrate any major geographical variations.
