Ceftriaxone for Surgical Prophylaxis: Clinical Experience and Pharmacoeconomics

Preface

The present pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic reevaluation of the penam, carbapenem and cephem betalactam antibiotics has highlighted some advantages of ceftriaxone which, because of its preclinical and clinical characteristics, plays an important role in its class and among all antibiotics. One of the most significant advantages in terms of efficacy and pharmacoeconomics of this cephalosporin is its use as short-term perioperative prophylaxis for clean and clean-contaminated surgery.

This supplement comprises various recent studies regarding use of ceftriaxone for prophylaxis in clean-contaminated colorectal surgery, liver transplant, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, surgery for esophageal carcinoma and also clean operations such as prosthetic implant and hernia repair.
