Abstract

In the ciliate Oxytricha bifaria, mating type specific mediators of the preconjugant cell interaction (gamones) had been found. In order to ascertain the correlation between cell metabolic events and preconjugative phenomena, two inhibitors, actinomycin D and cycloheximide, were used. RNA and protein synthesis were found to be involved in the processes leading to conjugation.
