Leontodon villarsii (Willd.) Loisel. and L. rosani (Ten.) DC. (Asteraceae): Nomenclatural, palynological, karyological, and micromorphological aspects

Pages 165-174 | Published online: 15 Nov 2010

Plants collected in southern France and Italy, identified as Leontodon villarsii (Willd.) Loisel., showed different chromosome numbers (2n = 14 and 2n = 22), distinctly different pollen morphology (triaperturate and tetraaperturate pollen grains), and a different distribution. These plants, especially when dried as herbarium vouchers, are difficult to identify on a mere morphological basis. In spite of this, they should be divided into two distinct species: L. villarsii (Willd.) Loisel. and L. rosani (Ten.) DC. Their nomenclatural types were selected and discussed.
