Abstract
Cytological and genetic aspects of aging in seeds. — Our present knowledge on the occurrence and accumulation in seeds of chromosome structural changes and of mutations with increasing age is reviewed. It is shown that mutations are the result, rather than the cause, of seed aging and that they are due to metabolites accumulating in seeds during aging. The mechanisms of this « automutagenic effect » of metabolites are discussed.
