Malate relations of plants and crassulacean acid metabolism: protons, carbon dioxide and water.—A review

Abstract

This review discusses the central role of malate in plant metabolism and in a large array of physiological processes in general. This is related to the function of crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) as an ecophysiological adaptation to limited water supply.
