Abstract
The formation of morphologically specialized cells in higher plants and the production of secondary products are integrated parts of a differentiation process. Secondary compounds represent an important chemical defence against herbivore feeding. Synthesis and accumulation of these compounds can be controlled endogenously and/or by exogenous factors such as injury or pathogen attack. The capacity for synthesis and accumulation can vary greatly within an organ or tissue. Cells as sites of synthesis or accumulation can be found in different organs and at different stages of plant development.
