Notes
1. The Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840 and guaranteed Māori the rights and privileges of British citizens as well as enabling them to retain chieftainship over their lands and resources. The Treaty settlement process began in 1992, and seeks to compensate Māori for instances where the Crown did not uphold these principles between these two years. The majority of claims lodged, covering the vast majority of tribal groups and areas, has now been settled (refer https://www.govt.nz/organisations/office-of-treaty-settlements/).
