Summary
The incidence of potato virus X in several varieties has been determined by the field agglutination test. The varieties Aucklander Short Top, Dakota Red, Arran Banner, Arran Consul, and Arran Pilot were one hundred per cent infected, while Chippewa and Sebago had a high degree of infection. No X-infected plants of the New Zealand variety Ilam Hardy could be found, and it appears to be field-immune. Two recently released varieties, Constellation and Southern Cross, and two introduced varieties, Ulster Beacon and Ulster Supreme, had a low degree of infection. The incidence and spread of the virus are discussed and the means of control outlined.
